Why We Use Nature as a Guide
“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” –Albert Einstein
Any exploration of systems invariably draws on nature:
- Nature is a key source for learning about systems. We are surrounded by natural systems, from the solar system to our own bodies. Observing nature’s rhythms and patterns can offer insights into how human-made systems work.
- Nature serves as a model. The ability of natural systems to develop creative solutions to design challenges can inform how we can approach problems in our own settings.
- Nature can provide inspiration and solace. Being outdoors reduces stress, improves mood, and offers a quiet setting for personal reflection. And the sense of awe we feel when surrounded by nature’s grandeur can put our daily concerns and distractions in perspective—and underscore the importance of our efforts to make deep, lasting improvements in the systems we care about.
For these reasons, as you move through this website, you will notice that we have incorporated images from nature into the graphics.
